Updated: May 1, 2024

Surrounded by rigid peaks and overlooking an alpine lake, our adventure unfolded amidst the Appenzell Alps. Nestled at an elevation of approximately 1,526 meters (5,007 feet) above sea level, Bergasthaus Staubern welcomed us with its cozy charm and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Serving as an ideal starting point for hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts, the guesthouse offered a warm respite amidst the tranquil alpine setting.

Setting off from Bergasthaus Staubern, the picturesque trail that wound its way along the ridge, guiding us through clusters of trees and patches of wildflowers amid rocky outcrops. After an invigorating hike of about an hour, we reached the magnificent Saxer Lücke lookout, perched at an elevation of approximately 2,155 meters (7,070 feet) above sea level. From this vantage point, we were treated to sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, enhanced by the interplay of shifting clouds and sunlight.

Following our exploration of Saxer Lücke, we descended towards the tranquil waters of Fälensee, where we savored refreshing drinks and took in the serenity of the alpine landscape. As we then went upwards on a switch back trail to Bergasthaus Staubern, we couldn't help but reflect on the beauty of the Appenzell region, renowned for its stunning natural scenery, charming villages, and rich cultural heritage.

The Appenzeller region captivates visitors with its idyllic landscapes, traditional architecture, and vibrant local culture. Whether indulging in the region's famed cheese and culinary delights or exploring its network of hiking trails and scenic vistas, Appenzeller offers an unforgettable alpine experience for all who venture into its midst.

As we said goodbye to Bergasthaus Staubern, we were struck by the sheer beauty of our surroundings. While we had always known it was a special place, experiencing it firsthand, particularly against the backdrop of the captivating clouds and the solitude of the trail, made it an exceptionally memorable day.
